Stilt Fishermen

Stilt Fishermen

Featured across the internet, postcards, brochures and travel magazines, the images of the stilt fishermen are symbolic with Sri Lanka. They hail from the south of Sri Lanka from the towns of Koggala to Weligama in the south coast and practice an ancient technique of fishing unique to this region only. The stilts, which are carved with notches, allow the fishermen to balance themselves with one hand holding on to the fishing rod and balancing themselves on the poles itself with the other. The fishermen are most active around dawn and dusk which are the times they can maximize their catch.
