Nuwara Eliya

Situated in the central highlands of the island, Nuwara Eliya is also known as “Little England” due to the cold climate, endless gardens of flowers and strawberries along with vegetables, and colonial style buildings and holiday homes. Some old brick buildings like the charming post office and country retreats like the hill club are reminders of the colonial days gone by. The salubrious climes are a contrast from the humid heat in the lowlands. The breathtaking views of the valleys, and mountain ranges as well as the lush greenery make Nuwara Eliya on of the most visited places by local and foreign tourists alike.

One of the picturesque attractions of the town is Lake Gregory, which his located close to the town, nestled at the bottom of small hills. A leisurely walk around or boat ride in the lake are some of the popular activities at Lake Gregory. Lake Gregory was fashioned under orders of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873. It also serves as an important catchment area for rainwater and mountain stream runoff, preventing flooding of the Nuwara Eliya town and its suburbs.

A visit to the Victoria Park is also worthwhile, which is situated at the center of the town, and is one of the best maintained town parks in South Asia. A leisurely stroll around its beautifully manicured gardens is always a pleasure. The park comes alive with an abundance of blossoming flowers around the period of March to May, as well as August and September. It is also one of the best places in the hill country to see some rare species of birds. From the Kashmir Flycatcher to the Velvet Fronted Nuthatch.

For nature lovers a visit to the Galway’s would be quite refreshing. This small forest patch is a lovely location to enjoy the highland nature and wildlife. Taking a walk on the forest paths, where you might come across some rare and endemic horned lizards, as well as the elusive Sri Lanka Scaly Thrush.
