Located in the North Wayamba province on the outskirts of Kurunegala, the ancient site of Yapahuwa is a magnificent piece of ancient architecture. Between the period of 1272 and 1284 King Buwanekabahu I established this ancient site as his capital and guarded the sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. The intricately carved stairway is breathtaking, and the majestic lion carving on the top of the stairway is a sight to behold. This amazing historical site is also quite isolated with less crowds and hence a peaceful and serene location to visit.
