Kanneliya Forest Reserve

A mix of logged secondary and virgin forest, Kanneliya is one of the last remaining tracts of lowland rainforest in the country and the flora and fauna here is akin to Sinharaja. It is around a 2 hour drive each way from Galle and can be considered as a day excursion. For birders, a high number of lowland endemics including the Serendib Scops Owl, Sri Lanka Spurfowl and Green-billed Coucal may be seen here. Among the mammals, the southern race of the endemic Purple-faced Leaf Monkey and Layard’s Striped Squirrel while endemic lizards including the Rough-nosed Horned and Hump-nosed Lizard. It is also an excellent location for butterfly and dragonfly watching with a variety of endemic species.
