Habaraduwa Turtle Hatchery

Habaraduwa Turtle Hatchery

The Green Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Olive Ridley and the Loggerhead Turtle are among five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles that nest on the beaches of Sri Lanka. Over the past few decades, sea turtle numbers have plummeted and some of the main threats include their eggs being illegally poached for local consumption and the development activities along the coast which have had an adverse impact on nesting sites. Habaraduwa remains one of the main nesting sites for sea turtles on the south coast and the hatcheries collect the most recently laid eggs and re-bury them in protected areas. Once the eggs hatch, the baby turtles are kept for a day or two in a tank prior to being released back into the ocean.
