Gangatilaka Vihara, Kalutara

Built in the 1960’s the Gangatilaka Vihara lies south of the Kalutara bridge which passes across the Kalu Ganga and is characterized by a huge, white and entirely hollow dagaba. The interior comprises of a smaller dagaba surrounded by four Buddha statues with Buddhist flags suspended from the ceiling. Opposite the temple is the sacred Bo tree and some other temple buildings. Most local travelers passing through the area will often stop here for prayers and make a donation as over the years it has gained a reputation for offering protection to motorists traveling along the Colombo – Galle Road.
