Maligawala, Monaragala

Maligawala, Monaragala

Maligawala is home to two large Buddha statues which are believed to have been a part of a monastery that dates back to the 7th century AD. It is one of the more interesting and lesser explored sites, which is surrounded by trees and scrub jungle and can be accessed from Monaragala. There is a path which divides in two directions; To the left is the 36 foot high statue of a standing Buddha while to the right lies the Bodhisatva statue adjacent to which is a 10th century pillar which has an inscription from the reign of King Mahinda IV about the laws relating to the administration of Buddhist sites.
